January 23rd, 2012 {baguettes! we don't need no stinkin baguettes!!}

dear general readers,
this week kinda shook things up a bit because this week i had my first
transfers!!!!!. wooo! so long story short elder peach has been moved (they
done snatched me daddy) and i now have a new companion named elder day.
elder day is an english man himself. he's from up north in good ol'e
yorkshire. it's kinda crazy because i've had to effectively take over the
area at the age of eight. (in the mission field they consider six weeks the
age of accountability). the good news is that i've only gotten us lost
once(so far), so hopefully, with some divine help, i'll be up to this whole
mission work thingy that we do on missions. so i have a pretty cool miracle
that i want to share that incidentally has to do with the instance of me
getting us lost.
yesterday we went through the area book and picked out some former
investigators that we want to go visit to see if they're willing to start
being taught again. two of the names that we decided on were on a street
called pine hill. now i looked up pine hill on our big area map and i
thought i knew about where it was located so i grabbed our smaller pocket
sized map and we headed out the door. when we got to the are i thought it
was near, i pulled out the smaller map just to double check only to realize
that the smaller map actually stopped at about two or three streets before
the turnoff from the main road.  so we had no idea where we needed to go.
now before i go on i need to explain some history about the area where i am
currently serving. epsom ward was set up about fifty years ago with the help
of some very hard working elders one of which had the name of elder holland.
THE elder holland. (yup i'm kind of working in one elder holland's old
areas. .
. . no pressure though). so in epsom we've developed a bit of a pick me up
catch phrase anytime we need a bit of motivation we just say to ourselves
wwjd "what would Jeffery do". so in this circumstance when we realized that
we did not in fact know where we were going or how to get there we had a
choice. we could either go back to the flat and choose some new names and
consider the time we had spent looking for these two formers wasted. or we
could go on into the unknown with absolutely no idea where we were going. we
chose the latter. and after about fifteen minutes of wandering we realized
that not only did we not find the street but that we no longer knew where we
were. whoops.
so at this point we decided that it would probably be better to cut our
losses and do some more finding so we started walking in what we thought was
the general direction of the area we needed to go. and after about a minute
we were sent a sign! quite literally god sent us a sign! a big road sign
that said "hey hopelessly lost missionaries pine hill is that way" just not
in so many words. i felt a little bit like nephi when he was led by the
spirit not knowing beforehand wither he should go. because we were led
miraculously to this street we were able to meet with one of the former
investigators and have an amazing teach. it's really amazing just how much
the lord will bless us if we give humble ourselves, or in this case allow
ourselves to be humbled by him.

oh and side note: elder day has heard of the beach boys in case anyone was
wondering.  love you all and i love hearing from you all.
with love
Elder Michael Jarman
